European open multimodal foundation models for adVancing AI-Enabled multidiscipLinarY eNvironmental pollution sciences

Objective

EVELYN aims to develop a novel Multimodal Foundation Model (MFM) in environmental pollution sciences using diverse large-scale data in multiple modalities to address a wide range of scientific challenges through a set of use cases and downstream related to the detection and characterisation of pollution sources, as well as their pathways, distribution, and impacts to the environment and human health. EVELYN will design a robust and reliable architecture encapsulating multiple modalities in a transparent way and pre-train the model from scratch. Moreover, EVELYN will adapt relevant state-of-the-art related foundation model(s) to the domain, allowing to compare the two approaches and also fuse them, while also integrating domain and scientific knowledge. Based on 6 use cases and 12 downstream tasks regarding air, water, and soil pollution (including PFAS), the developed MFM will be fine-tuned to deliver a portfolio of task-specialised models to support environmental pollution scientists. EVELYN will also develop cross-cutting methods for enabling trustworthy, fair, transparent, interpretable, explainable, robust, generalisable, and reliable AI. EVELYN will also ensure regulatory compliance, identify potential social and societal risks, and deliver policy recommendations. Finally, EVELYN will promote Open Science and sustainability through public open releases, along with comprehensive dissemination, communication, and collaboration activities. With 5 partners with AI expertise, 4 partners with expertise on environmental pollution sciences, 1 SME focusing on environmental applications, 1 SSH partner addressing legal, ethical, and social dimensions, and 1 public sector technology company, with 2 consortium members operating EuroHPC supercomputers, the EVELYN consortium delivers a strong representation of the expertise, challenges, and technologies required to meet our goals and to contribute significantly to enhancing the European Open Science.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Net EU contribution

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
