Objective
As the number of electric vehicles (EVs) in circulation across Europe increases, so too will the volume of EVs reaching end-of-life (EOL). CarMine project aims to proactively address this inevitable scenario by developing an integrated strategy for the recovery, recycling, and valorization of critical raw materials used on EOL-EVs. These include materials from batteries (e.g. lithium, nickel, cobalt) and permanent magnets (e.g. rare earth elements) found in electric motors.
The project will focus on recovering and processing materials listed as critical and strategic by the European Union, contributing to the EU’s resource security and industrial autonomy. Recovered materials will be reintegrated into the production of new materials, with their performance benchmarked against virgin materials through rigorous comparative assessments.
CarMine will implement a pilot-scale demonstration covering both EOL-EV dismantling operations and the recycling of lithium-ion batteries and NdFeB magnets. This integrated approach will be supported by digital traceability tools and comprehensive life cycle assessment methodologies to ensure environmental, economic, and regulatory alignment across the entire value chain.
In parallel, the project will work towards the creation of a European circular value chain centred on the electric vehicle, incorporating key elements such as innovative business model development and the implementation of a digital product passport to ensure traceability, transparency, and regulatory alignment throughout the lifecycle of materials. CarMine will also prioritize the safety and well-being of operators involved in dismantling vehicles and batteries, as well as those engaged in recycling processes. CarMine represents a forward-looking step towards a circular and resilient European economy, where EOL-Evs become a strategic source of critical raw materials and sustainable innovation.
