Objective
Fluorinated gases (F-gases) are the fastest growing group of greenhouse gas emissions globally. The EU F-gas regulation and the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal protocol requires a gradual F-gas phase-out. The majority of F-gases is used in the refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pump sector. While technical alternatives exist, based on natural refrigerants, decision makers in industry and policymaking lacks a robust, transparent and science-based framework to evaluate F-gas mitigation strategies across regions, sectors and time horizons. F-MAP responds to this gap by developing an open modelling tool that enables the identification and assessment of cost-optimal and emission-optimal mitigation pathways, with the ambition to accelerate the transition towards natural refrigerant. The F-MAP tool moves beyond the state of the art by integrating techno-economic, environmental and socio-technical dimensions into a flexible framework, allowing users to also explore interactions with energy system decarbonisation, regional policy contexts, educational level, and industry competitiveness. Also, a comprehensive database will be integrated into the tool, populated with technologies at various TRL, and updated emission data and leakage rates, thus advancing the technological insights in F-gas emissions and mitigation options. The tool will be demonstrated through four case studies, across three continents (Europe, Asia and Africa), representing various climatic conditions, and levels of socio-economic development and energy system characteristics. By combining rigorous modelling with open science practices, stakeholder engagement, and interdisciplinary approaches, F-MAP will extend the modelling capacity on a regional level, and deliver actionable insights to researchers, industry, civil society and policymakers. The project builds on more than three decades of leading expertise in natural refrigerant technologies, energy efficiency measures, and policy implementations.

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
