EXTREME EVENTS IN A WARMING, UNEQUAL WORLD: LINKING DRIVERS TO IMPACTS FOR IMPROVED ATTRIBUTION, FORECASTING AND REGIONAL RESPONSES

Objective

SUNRISE brings together 19 academic and non-academic partners from three continents with the scope of advancing the knowledge and practices of attribution science, impact assessment and operationalized forecasting of climate and weather extreme events at global scale. SUNRISE will challenge the state of the art by (i) producing new comprehensive data collections that can serve as references for future studies, (ii) enhancing the understanding of physical mechanisms and causal pathways to strengthen attribution analyses and model development, build operationalized seasonal forecasts and test their skill as early warning systems, (iii) developing novel impact-focused attribution frameworks that integrates climatic and non-climatic drivers across sectors, combines cutting-edge datasets with multivariate methods, and delivers spatially explicit tools for the attribution of compound events and impacts which might be ground-breaking to support adaptation in vulnerable regions, (iv) creating tools for climate justice analyses to inform risk assessment, adaptation planning, and policy support, and (v) delivering attribution services that will help operationalize attribution science. Moreover, SUNRISE will (vi) conduct on the ground surveys to better understand the needs for fair and just adaptation measures of local communities facing increasing danger due to climate change and weather extremes in Europe as much as in the Global South (South America and West Africa). SUNRISE will (vii) interact with local stakeholders, organize workshops and connect these activities with pilot projects to study and implement new adaptation measures with the active involvement of citizen science, civil societies and high-school level students. Thus, SUNRISE brings together physical and social sciences to tackle the great challenge of climate and weather extremes in a warming world and actively contribute to a fair and just mitigation, adaptation and policy measures in a practical way.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

POLITECNICO DI MILANO
Net EU contribution

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
