GWPathFinder: Projecting Fluorinated Gas Emission Pathways with GWP Insights for a Sustainable Future

Objective

"The GWPathFinder project will develop and deploy an open-access online tool to provide accurate Global Warming Potential (GWP) values for fluorinated gases (F-gases) and project detailed emission pathways. This initiative directly supports the Kigali and Paris Agreements by providing evidence-based policy recommendations and industry best practices for F-gas emission reduction.
Key objectives include:
- Generating a suite of regionally and sectorally disaggregated F-gas emission pathways, including baseline, Kigali-compliant, and ""outperforming Kigali"" scenarios.
- Developing and validating a robust machine learning algorithm to predict GWP values for current and novel F-gases and their major degradation products, extending the scope of existing reports.
- Enhancing two leading integrated assessment models, PROMETHEUS and TIAM-ECN, to meticulously capture interactions between F-gas mitigation and energy system decarbonization, including the deployment of HFC alternatives in sectors like refrigeration, air conditioning, and heat pumps (RACHP).
- Designing and publicly launching the user-friendly GWPathFinder online platform, which will integrate the GWP prediction tool and mitigation scenarios. This tool will function as an interactive decision-support system, enabling users to test different policy assumptions.
- Ensuring all research outputs, including data and models, are managed according to FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) and Open Science principles.
The project will advance from Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 3-4 to TRL 6-7. Deliverables include a validated GWP database, a robust machine learning algorithm, enhanced F-gas emission pathway models, and the publicly accessible GWPathFinder online tool, which will be a fully functional prototype ready for widespread pilot deployment by the end of the 36-month project."

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
