Objective
The Mediterranean faces pressures from climate change, pollution, biodiversity degradation and overexploitation. MEDCONNECT combats these challenges and enhances the 1st phase of Mission Ocean and waters in the Mediterranean basin, focusing on all Mission’s objectives -restoring marine & freshwater ecosystems & biodiversity, eliminating pollution, making blue economy climate-neutral & circular. The project covers the Mediterranean with 22 Partners from 15 countries, organized in 3 regional (Western, Central, Eastern) and 15 National Hubs. MEDCONNECT focuses on mobilizing investments in the 3 regional systems to accelerate deployment of solutions relevant to Mission’s objectives. Embedded Ecosystem Transformation mobilises local 5-Helix stakeholders and secures collaboration with EU & Med initiatives, while targeted Behavioural Change ensures that solutions are socially accepted. A Digital Monitoring Framework, that brings together EU authoritative sources and citizen-science into an open architecture Portal, supports the Mediterranean Lighthouse governance, environmental monitoring, citizen engagement, and co-creation across Hubs. The core of MEDCONNET is the 3 Regional Living Lab Systems (ES, AL, CY), each focusing on a Mission objective, where stakeholders and citizens jointly refine 15 selected solutions under real coastal conditions, accelerating adoption. Tailored Capacity Building provides local stakeholders with the necessary technical skills and capacities to operate & upscale the innovative solutions. MEDCONNECT implements investment mobilization activities, for solutions to get financed and deployed in real socio-economic systems, thus contributing to Mission’s Impact realization. A Dissemination, Exploitation & Communication Strategy secures basin-wide awareness and citizen involvement, towards a permanent ecosystem that implements all Mission Objectives, sustains innovation uptake and strengthens Mediterranean resilience beyond the project’s lifetime.
