Optimising Bioeconomy Innovation Ecosystems for Substitution, Circularity, and Longevity to Decouple Sustainability Trade-offs

Objective

BIOSCALES addresses the challenges of bioeconomy as a pathway to a sustainable economic system that balances ecological, social, and economic trade-offs. Despite numerous European initiatives, key conflicts—such as between climate protection and biodiversity, biomass use and ecological quality, and land-use competition—remain unresolved. The project adopts an integrated, systemic approach to utilise three core decoupling mechanisms essential for sustainable bioeconomy: (1) responsible use of bio-based products with extended product lifespans to maximise socio-economic benefits; (2) circular biomass utilisation to reduce waste and demand for primary biomass; and (3) substitution of energy-intensive conventional products with bio-based alternatives that verifiably replace rather than add to conventional production.

Five geographically and socio-economically diverse case studies across Europe (Romania, Netherlands, Spain, Austria, Sweden) form the basis for co-designing, co-creating and co-validating sustainability-optimised target states (SOTS) for bioeconomy innovation ecosystems (RIV4BFS) following a multi-actor approach. The techno-economic feasibility and the acceptance among end users representing the Quintuple Helix will be demonstrated for each SOTS. The methodology promotes open science to enhance transparency, dialogue, and public participation. Replication and exploitation will be fostered by providing a self-assessment tool, online learning modules and exploitation resources. These resources will enable RIV4BFS, beyond the case studies, to autonomously identify SOTS in their own innovation ecosystems and support the transformation of these ecosystems towards the identified SOTS.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
