Copernicus Fire and Land-Atmosphere Modelling of Emissions

Objective

The Copernicus Fire and Land-Atmosphere Modelling of Emissions (CoFLAME) proposal will deliver the scientific and technical advances to better account for the interactions between wildfires and vegetation and therefore improve the estimates of wildfire emissions and natural fluxes of CO2. CoFLAME will also improve the forecasting of fire activity, fire probability, and fire spread. This will contribute to the improvement of existing and future services of the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) and the Copernicus Emergency Management Service (CEMS), also improving the uptake of existing Copernicus Land Monitoring Service (CLMS) data sets. Using the context of this CO2MVS development support call provides the opportunity to significantly contribute to the further development of the emission monitoring capabilities within Copernicus linking CEMS and CLMS more closely to CAMS, while at the same time also improving existing services related to fires within CEMS and CAMS.

Firstly, CoFLAME will develop methodologies for use in the land surface model of the global CAMS services, including the CO2MVS, that account for the impact of fires on vegetation and the subsequent regrowth. Satellite-based data sets will be used to constrain the modelling. Secondly, CoFLAME will further develop existing models that are used to forecast fire activity, fire probability, and fire spread within CAMS and CEMS. Thirdly, CoFLAME will use observations of atmospheric pollutants to better calibrate the CAMS GFAS fire estimation system. The spatio-temporal variability of the estimated fire emissions will be improved by implementing and testing new parameterisations. Throughout the proposed work, the use of specific products from CLMS will be assessed and implemented to improve the CMS and CEMS services.
