Pollution Observation from Space: Environmental Imaging for Detections in Oceans & Nearshore (POSEIDON)

Objective

The project intends to leverage optical and radar based satellite technology to improve a) services for estimating volume, thickness, and characterization of oil spills and for detecting oil spills in sea ice conditions; b) methods for detecting and identifying chemical products, sewage, and garbage on the sea surface; c) protocols for detecting and identifying exhaust gas cleaning system residue and methane emissions; and d) AI approaches for enhancing timeliness, automation, and confidence of the solutions to be developed under points a-c. The project aims then to validate the solutions developed under points a-d under relevant operating conditions at a series of pre-determined use cases.
