Objective
Quantum computing (QC) is maturing with devices with up to hundreds of noisy qubits being commercially available. First commercial fault-tolerant quantum computers are expected in 2029. In parallel, the integration of QC into HPC systems advances and quantum software stacks (QSS) emerge – so far however requiring a very HW-aware programming. Beyond that, unlocking the potential of QC in promising areas such as simulation, optimization and artificial intelligence requires efficient quantum-classical workflows that use the quantum device as accelerator.
Building upon prototypical QSSs and software tools, the project EuroQSS proposes a universal, interoperable European Quantum Computing Software Stack (EuroQSS) with open interfaces to enable both open- and closed-source innovations of the future. It takes in different European developments and extends those in key areas. EuroQSS will directly support hybrid quantum-classical workflows to achieve concrete, perspective quantum advantage in industrial applications. EuroQSS supports both near-term devices, as well as prospective fault-tolerant quantum computers. To this extend, EuroQSS directly integrates the requirements of quantum error correction into its compilation and scheduling layers. Thirdly, unlocking industrial potential of QC requires the efficient interplay of different layers in a QSS and to be easy in use for the industrial user. EuroQSS realizes both by a number of abstraction layers within the stack, such as making the compilation towards the user agnostic of the underlying quantum hardware, while still fully exploiting hardware capabilities.
Within EuroQSS, an interdisciplinary consortium contributes. The consortium is strong in competences regarding quantum hardware & software and application knowledge and presents itself as extension to previously funded EU projects within the EU Quantum Flagship to realize scalable quantum computers and simulators, extending those projects into the QSS.
