MOdular Reconfigurable Platform for Health and Environmental Universal Sensing

Objective

The MORPHEUS project proposes a next-generation, sustainable and modular platform for multiparameter sensing in sensitive indoor environments such as hospitals, clinics, and long-term care facilities. By integrating soft, solution-processed electronics, functional 2D/0D materials and polymeric systems, MORPHEUS will deliver a fully flexible and reconfigurable sensing system capable of monitoring both human physiological signals and environmental conditions in real time. The core innovation of MORPHEUS is a plug-and-sense architecture: a conformable, ultra-thin electronic backbone supports interchangeable sensor modules that can detect a wide range of parameters—including pressure, temperature, strain, humidity and bio-impedance. Each sensor type will be fabricated using scalable, green techniques such as inkjet/spray printing and vacuum processing onto biodegradable or recyclable, biocompatible substrates. These substrate materials, engineered for skin safety and end-of-life degradability, ensure full compliance with Safe and Sustainable by Design principles. MORPHEUS will directly address healthcare challenges by enabling continuous, unobtrusive sensing of vital signs of patients and monitoring of environmental risks such as air quality degradation or pathogen-prone humidity levels. Wireless data transmission will rely on energy-efficient NFC and BLE protocols, powered by flexible energy-harvesting components. Throughout development, clinical stakeholders from hospital environments will provide input on user needs, ergonomic design, and deployment feasibility, ensuring that the system responds to real-world requirements for both patients and healthcare personnel. MORPHEUS will carry out comprehensive LCA//LCC analyses, as well as biocompatibility testing and regulatory preparation, including pre-standardization actions. MORPHEUS sets a new benchmark for sustainable, patient-centric health-tech innovation in Europe.
