Objective
Cement production is responsible for 8% of global CO2 emissions, with each ton of Ordinary Portland Cement (CEM I) releasing around 850kg of CO2. To reduce emissions, the industry has long relied on Supplementary Cementitious Materials (SCMs) such as fly ash and granulated blast furnace slag to substitute clinker. However, these traditional SCMs are now in short supply due to the phase-out of coal-fired power plants and the decarbonization of steelmaking. At the same time, regulatory pressure from the EU ETS and CBAM is driving up the cost of carbon compliance. The lack of scalable, low-carbon SCM alternatives has therefore become a major bottleneck for reducing clinker use and achieving deep decarbonization across the cement and concrete industry.
CO-REACTIVE has developed the world’s first TUBULAR CO-Reactor for CO2 mineralization, a scalable technology that transforms captured CO2 into carbon-negative, highly reactive cementitious materials (COSCM). Our process offsets the cost of carbon capture while reducing clinker demand, directly cutting the carbon footprint of cement. By upcycling waste metallurgical slags rich in calcium silicates, we chemically bind CO2 into stable carbonates and that act as pozzolanic materials, enhancing the strength and durability of cement mixes. For every ton of CO2 avoided, 3 tons of value-added COSCMs are produced with a negative carbon footprint of -330 kg CO2 per ton of COSCM, offering the optimal use of captured carbon.
