Gravitational wave cosmology with galaxy catalogs

Objective

"Gravitational waves (GWs) from compact binary coalescences offer a novel and independent way to directly measure astronomical distances. When combined with redshift information, these measurements provide constraints on cosmological parameters, including the Hubble constant, giving a fresh perspective on the current ""Hubble tension"". However, extracting redshift information for GW sources requires complementary electromagnetic (EM) observations, either via direct host galaxy identification or statistically via galaxy surveys. With only one GW detection associated to an EM counterpart so far, large-scale galaxy surveys are essential for robust GW cosmology. The next decade will see an unprecedented influx of data from both GW detectors (LIGO, Virgo, KAGRA) and galaxy surveys (LSST, Euclid, DESI, 4-MOST, WEAVE), necessitating seamless collaboration between the GW and EM communities.

GWCats aims to foster interdisciplinary research at the intersection of GW and EM astronomy, developing advanced computational tools, and optimising data-sharing strategies. Its three main objectives are: (1) training a new generation of researchers fluent in both GW and EM methodologies, with a focus on AI and high-performance computing; (2) maximising scientific impact through improved data integration and cross-disciplinary collaboration; and (3) informing data-sharing policies to enhance synergies between large international collaborations. By developing state-of-the-art methodologies, refining statistical frameworks, and leveraging AI for data analysis, GWCats will set a new standard for GW cosmology. The project will deliver the most precise GW measurements of the Hubble constant to date, quantify the impact of future observations, and provide strategic guidance on optimising GW-EM data integration.
GWCats will lay the foundation for a long-term collaboration between the GW and EM communities, ensuring that the potential of GW cosmology is fully realised in the coming years."
