Objective
Europe faces a pressing need to conserve resources, requiring new ways to repair, refurbish, and remanufacture components efficiently. In the future, hybrid processing techniques that combine metal 3D printing with traditional manufacturing could make it possible to repair components by integrating sequential material melting, reshaping, and property finalization where needed. Yet, fundamental questions are still unsolved. This is because such hybrid processes magnify complexities due to phenomena occurring across multiple physical domains, spanning a vast range of length and time scales. This challenge demands multiscale and multidisciplinary approaches to completely apprehend it.
Consequently, the objective is to develop a joined modeling and simulation approach for customizing mechanical properties of metal components by predicting required hybrid processing roadmaps grounded in a deep understanding of the changes in the material’s internal structure. This will be achieved by developing a novel physics-based material simulation framework grounded in experimental processing and analysis. This framework will seamlessly integrate manufacturing details in a prediction of mechanical properties via a detailed numerical representation of the physical mechanisms.
Meta-HyPeR will allow to raise hybrid processing to the next level by accurately predicting the necessary hybrid processing sequences to repair and manufacture components while simultaneously customizing their quality and performance. The work will lead to a universal materials and processing simulation platform capable of predictably linking the component’s mechanical properties to the processing steps that created them. The far-reaching implications extend beyond materials science and manufacturing engineering as it reduces waste by efficient repair and eliminating energy-intensive post-processing, revolutionizing the way we fabricate and maintain high-performance components in a sustainable life cycle.

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
