OSIRIS-EU: Open Science inspiring Inclusive Research and Innovation towards Societal Impact in Europe

Objective

OSIRIS-EU unites leading EuropeanOSIRIS-EU brings together leading European organisations and strategic partners from third countries to advance a comprehensive vision of Open Science as a driver of societal progress. Through staff exchanges across disciplines, sectors and borders, the project mobilises expertise to demonstrate how openness in research can generate tangible benefits for citizens while strengthening Europe’s capacity for innovation.

Inspired by Osiris, the ancient symbol of renewal and regeneration, the project reflects the ambition to revitalise research ecosystems by embedding openness, transparency and collaboration at their core. Rather than focusing on isolated practices, OSIRIS-EU promotes Open Science as a systemic transformation of research cultures, encompassing participation, reproducibility and responsible evaluation, with the aim of reinforcing the connection between scientific knowledge and societal needs.

By fostering international, intersectoral and interdisciplinary mobility, OSIRIS-EU develops the skills and career prospects of researchers and support staff while building institutional capacity to adopt and mainstream Open Science. Exchanges between academic and non-academic partners promote mutual learning and sustainable cooperation, ensuring that knowledge circulates effectively within and beyond Europe. The involvement of third-country organisations broadens this ambition, opening new opportunities for dialogue across research systems and reinforcing Europe’s position as a global reference in responsible and socially engaged science.

Ultimately, OSIRIS-EU seeks to show how Open Science can move from principle to practice, generating measurable societal impact and contributing to a more open, resilient and inclusive European Research Area—one that empowers researchers, engages citizens and strengthens Europe’s leadership in shaping transparent, collaborative and impactful research for the challenges of the twenty-first century.
