Long-range entangled matter in an adaptive quantum processor

Objective

Quantum many-body states can be classified by whether they can be generated in finite time using only local interactions. States for which this is impossible possess long-range entanglement and underpin key advances in quantum information science. They appear as ground states in condensed matter, as optimal metrological resources, and as building blocks for fault-tolerant computation, yet they are hard to prepare on noisy, shallow-depth hardware because long evolutions accumulate errors. Measurement-based quantum computing (MBQC) offers a route: by performing adaptive local measurements on certain resource states, long-range entanglement can be created in bounded depth. However, applying tools from MBQC in matter qubits has been hampered by low-fidelity, small-scale mid-circuit measurements.
In this proposal, I aim to overcome this barrier by designing and building an adaptive neutral-atom processor. The platform combines scalability, long coherence, and high-fidelity readout; our recent experiments have demonstrated high-fidelity two-qubit gates and mid-circuit readout. The proposed processor will generate large graph states of trapped atoms, perform high-fidelity mid-circuit measurements, and implement low-latency feedforward.
With this capability we will engineer and probe measurement-induced phases of matter, from single-round to multi-round protocols and higher-dimensional connectivity. We will exploit these states to (i) enhance atomic-clock precision beyond standard limits, (ii) explore non-equilibrium many-body dynamics and phase transitions, and (iii) realize topologically protected operations for fault-tolerant quantum computing.
By uniting MBQC with neutral-atom hardware, this project establishes a scalable route to prepare and exploit long-range-entangled states on near-term processors and, ultimately, in fault-tolerant architectures.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.

Net EU contribution

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
