Objective
This project will deliver pioneering work towards establishing a framework to estimate and analyse homicides and quantify their impacts on population health in contexts with high levels of violence in Latin America. By analysing homicides alongside novel population health indicators —such as the lifetime risk of becoming a victim of violence and estimates of orphanhood due to homicides— this project will move beyond existing approaches focused exclusively on homicide rates, and provide a more comprehensive picture of the detrimental consequences of violence on population health.
DEMOVIOLENCE has three objectives: 1) To pioneer demographic methods and develop novel indicators of population health for contexts with high violence; 2) To empirically quantify the impact of homicides on kinship dynamics through orphanhood estimates; and 3) to forecast life expectancy and lifespan inequality under varying scenarios of violence to identify the challenges ahead posed by changing dynamics of this important source of population health variation.
This project is relevant and timely because violence has been rising in many regions of the world in recent years with substantial consequences for individuals, communities and their families, and for population health more broadly. DEMOVIOLENCE will address these ambitions using both established and new demographic methods along with advanced statistical techniques to harness the power of multiple sources of data to accurately estimate homicides and mortality profiles subnationally in contexts with high violence in Latin America. It addresses important challenges faced across various disciplines including demography, sociology and public health, while focusing on a critical social determinant of health: violence. This project will produce robust evidence on the impact of violence on population health metrics, thereby advancing the understanding and knowledge about its consequences on people’s lives.
