Systematic Knowledge Integration in Peace and Conflict Research

Objective

Peace and conflict research faces a fundamental representational challenge. While conflicts are inherently relational phenomena — involving multiple actors, contested territories, and competing narratives — our field remains constrained by tabular data structures that artificially resolve ambiguities and cannot efficiently represent relationships. This mismatch between conceptual understanding and data architecture has fragmented the field: researchers create parallel datasets rather than building cumulative knowledge, while the separation of data from definitions eliminates nuanced entity matching. The contested, multifaceted nature of social science concepts becomes flattened, undermining measurement validity and widening the qualitative – quantitative divide.

BRIDGE transforms this landscape by developing knowledge graph representations that preserve rather than suppress disagreements, enabling integration across quantitative datasets and qualitative findings. Unlike tabular formats, knowledge graphs explicitly model relationships, maintain multiple perspectives on contested concepts, and make conceptual and measurement choices computationally transparent. This approach bridges methodological divides and enables discovery across the fragmented research landscape.

By developing AI-enhanced methods to extract structured knowledge from research literature and construct these graphs, BRIDGE will fundamentally transform how peace and conflict knowledge is accumulated, integrated, and analyzed — moving from isolated datasets to interconnected, queryable knowledge that better reflects the complexity of conflict dynamics.
