The Tree of Lifespan - How the Length of Life Branches Across Multiple Social Determinants of Health

Objective

How long do we live? Expectations about lifespan influence many aspects of life: from individual decisions, such as retirement savings, to public policies, such as indexation of retirement age and healthcare investments. Current practice, however, estimates expected lifespan for broad population groups, neglecting how multiple social determinants of health, including education, income, marital status and place of residence jointly shape lifespan. Lifespan branches across these determinants, forming a complex ‘tree of lifespan’. The current understanding of the tree is crudely limited to one or two determinants at a time. The Tree of Lifespan project addresses this knowledge gap by establishing the field of granular demography and providing a formal framework for estimating, forecasting and analysing lifespan across multiple intersecting social determinants of health. Its ambitions are threefold: (1) Estimation and forecasting of lifespan for fine-grained subpopulations defined by intersections of multiple social determinants of health using and evaluating mortality forecasting models and demographic reconstruction techniques when data are scarce or incomplete. (2) Formal analysis of how lifespan differences across multiple social determinants of health drive general mortality patterns and regularities through the development and application of novel demographic models and relations. (3) Evaluation of broader inequalities arising from lifespan inequalities, such as unequal survival to retirement age and unequal time spent with family members, through the analysis of transition into specific life stages and time spent in them. The Tree of Lifespan project will deliver a powerful toolbox for analysing lifespan inequalities across multiple dimensions, pioneer a new line of demographic research that uncovers the sources of unequal lifespans and paves the way for similar advances in other research areas.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

SYDDANSK UNIVERSITET
Net EU contribution

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
