Objective
The EU has set ambitious targets of achieving climate neutrality by 2050. To reduce CO2 emissions, novel combustion technology investigates the use of alternative fuels (CO2-free or neutral), ultra-lean and low-temperature processes to reduce pollutant emissions. Unfortunately, stability and efficiency issues arise for this new type of flames. Plasma-assisted combustion (PAC) represents a revolutionary approach to enhancing combustion processes. By leveraging the unique properties of plasma discharges, in particular its chemical reactivity, PAC promises to increase combustion efficiency and reduce emissions. Nonetheless, the practical application of this technology remains delayed. Our understanding of the underlying physical mechanisms remains rudimentary, lacking a comprehensive theoretical framework to substantiate experimental findings. At this crucial point in time where PAC could revolutionize the energy industry, we are lacking reliable predictive tools to allow the design of real applications. ESCAPADE's overarching aim is to develop a multi-physics simulation framework for PAC based on evolved physico-chemical models to allow the study and the design of novel combustors. We will follow 3 goals: (1) Pioneer a novel data-driven strategy to construct advanced models combining ab initio data with machine-learning (ML) predictions to build the first database of benchmark cases for multi-physics PAC simulations. (2) Reduce the computational cost of the computations using high-fidelity reduced-order models based on innovative ML techniques. (3) Couple the tools with computational fluid dynamics software to allow new simulations with detailed information for real industrial applications. We will focus on new fuels (NH3/H2) and existing transport fuels allowing retrofitting of existing setups. ESCAPADE will generate new fundamental knowledge on plasma-assisted processes and address the grand challenge of improving predictive simulations, beyond combustion.

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
