Towards fault tolerant quantum computation with noise-biased qubits

Objective

Superconducting quantum computers have the potential to solve certain complex problems exponentially faster than classical computers, enabling potential breakthroughs in basic science, applied chemistry, and material science. However, they require precise control over fragile quantum systems that are highly sensitive to environmental disturbances. These disturbances are causing errors that need to be detected and corrected. With current technology, this task comes with significant hardware overhead, typically requiring millions of physical qubits to perform useful calculations. This presents an unreasonable economic and environmental challenge for the development of quantum computers.

In TURQUOISE, I will adopt a novel approach by using noise-biased qubits to implement quantum error correction, instead of standard qubits with symmetric error rates. In noise-biased qubits, bit flips are a lot less frequent than phase flips, which allows for more hardware-efficient quantum error correction. 1) I will leverage the unique properties of fluxonium — a superconducting qubit with one of the highest coherence and control fidelity reported to date — to create a new qubit with a very large noise bias. This will be achieved by reaching a novel parameter regime with noise-resilient circuit designs. 2) I will explore entirely new control strategies that utilize the noise bias to perform multi-qubit operations. 3) I will then implement a logical qubit and evaluate its performance to demonstrate the potential of noise-biased architecture in shifting the paradigm of quantum computation.

The TURQUOISE project aims to deepen our understanding of quantum electrical circuits, qubit control, and quantum error correction, ultimately opening new horizons for practical quantum computing.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.

HORIZON-ERC - HORIZON ERC Grants

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

CENTRE NATIONAL DE LA RECHERCHE SCIENTIFIQUE CNRS
Net EU contribution

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
