Objective
Lithium-based batteries underpin nearly all portable, automotive, and grid-scale energy systems, however, nowadays their performance is reaching theoretical limits. Current cathode chemistries, mainly NMC, NCA, and LiFePO₄, cannot deliver the ultra-lightweight, high-capacity storage required for electric aviation, space, and defence applications. Moreover, their dependence on critical transition metals such as cobalt, nickel, and manganese introduces severe environmental, ethical, and geopolitical vulnerabilities, while production and disposal of inorganic cathodes contribute significantly to CO2 emissions and toxic waste production.
Biotron Energy LLC is addressing these limitations through a revolutionary class of metal-free cathode-active materials based on plant-derived, electrochemically active biopolymers. These protein-based compounds, engineered with specific amino acid architectures, exhibit unique redox activity and a highly porous 3D molecular structure densely populated with functional groups capable of lithium-ion interaction. This design enables exceptional charge storage and stability without any transition metals or structural additives.
Laboratory prototypes developed and validated have demonstrated record-breaking performance: specific capacities up to 30,000 Ah/kg and energy densities exceeding 63,000 Wh/kg, surpassing all known lithium-based cathodes and even pure lithium’s theoretical limit. Beyond performance, Biotron Energy’s technology achieves over 95% lower CO2 emissions compared to conventional cathodes and eliminates risks of thermal runaway or fire.
