RENEW-Futures: Regenerative Design for Beautiful, Inclusive and Ecological Neighbourhoods

Objective

RENEW-Futures delivers three innovations to make New European Bauhaus values (sustainable, inclusive, beautiful) actionable at neighbourhood scale:
(1) Regenerative Design Tool (RN-DT): digital-twin environment that couples water-energy-materials-biodiversity modelling with social, cultural and health indicators. It lets practitioners test “what-if” scenarios, visualise trade-offs and track whole-life performance using harmonised indicators (Level(s), Living Community Challenge, CRCF, etc.) providing tested, proven principles of regenerative design to actors across the construction ecosystem.
(2) Community Co-Creation Tool: immersive AR/VR interface that renders RN-DT outputs as place-aware experiences, enabling inclusive, collaborative design with residents and local stakeholders.
(3) The Regenerative Framework: interdisciplinary, uniquely water-sensitive methodology that models interdependencies from building to neighbourhood, and integrates SSH, lifecycle, circularity and sufficiency principles. The framework, using partners’ validated models, enables regenerative design decisions to ensure neighbourhoods are water-positive, energy-self-sufficient, and socially inclusive.

A “Regenerative Evidence Atlas” comprising 14 Europe-wide building case studies analyses success factors, barriers, policy enablers and performance, using our novel Regenerative Framework. This sets baselines and targets for demonstration.

The tools and framework are validated in five demonstrators spanning urban, peri-urban and rural contexts: Pomaretto (IT), Luleå (SE), Cluj-Napoca (RO), Vila Franca de Xira (PT), and Cartesius–Utrecht (NL). Cross-case evaluation against NEB principles evidences water-positive design, biodiversity gains, climate resilience and wellbeing impacts, supporting replication, standardisation and policy uptake.

Capacity-building, open tools/APIs and policy briefs ensure uptake by cities and industry. The tools will be maintained post-project as a lasting resource.
