CANVAS: STREET FURNITURE AS A CANVAS - BEAUTY, INCLUSION AND SUSTAINABILITY IN PUBLIC SPACE

Objective

CANVAS treats street furniture both as a means and as a canvas for shaping future-proof, beautiful and multifunctional public spaces. Across seven pilot sites in diverse European cities, the project will prototype and demonstrate inclusive, sustainable solutions that improve comfort, safety and accessibility year-round; integrate nature-based shading and planting, circular materials and low-maintenance design rooted in local heritage; and offer modular, adaptive features that serve diverse users. Five cross-cutting demonstration themes structure the pilots: (1) safety, functionality and resilience; (2) cultural identity and aesthetics; (3) nature-based and circular “living furniture”; (4) inclusivity and universal access; and (5) sociability and adaptability.
Guided by New European Bauhaus values, CANVAS mobilises four principles: co-creation and togetherness; transdisciplinarity for multifunctional and climate resilient spaces; future-proofing for scalability and replication; and circularity for revitalisation and sustainability. Through creative experimentation and practical implementation, the pilots will act as living showcases that strengthen local identity, foster social cohesion and enhance environmental performance in neglected or under-served areas.
Deployable prototypes, open design guidelines, and research-driven recommendations for public procurement and urban policy are supported by a comprehensive monitoring framework and replication roadmaps as well as the CANVAS-on-tour platform focusing on scaling and new partnerships. By bridging design excellence, community participation and evidence-based assessment, CANVAS establishes and validates a EU benchmark for street furniture that transforms shared spaces into vibrant, equitable and climate-resilient places.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
