Circular Business Models for Adaptive Renovation and Sustainable Built Environment Transformation

Objective

CIRCUBUILT pioneers breakthrough renovation methods rooted in New European Bauhaus (NEB) principles of adaptability, disassembly, circularity, beauty, and inclusion. The project operationalises the NEB Toolbox through real-world demonstrations across Barcelona (ES), Vari-Voula-Vouliagmeni (GR), and Hartlepool (UK) to validate adaptive and disassemblable design solutions. Leveraging circular materials from hospital and plastic waste, fully modular, tool-free interior systems, and participatory co-creation, CIRCUBUILT delivers scalable, sustainable, and aesthetically compelling renovated environments. The integrated product-as-a-service business models and digital material passports ensure lifecycle traceability and market viability of these circular innovations. The project engages diverse stakeholders using NEB-aligned methods, fostering social inclusion and cultural resonance while significantly reducing embodied carbon and construction waste. CIRCUBUILT’s pilots demonstrate measurable environmental, social, and economic benefits consistent with the NEB Compass values—Sustainability, Inclusion, and Beauty—ensuring technology and policy innovation integrates seamlessly with community needs and European frameworks. This system-level approach prepares adaptive, circular renovation to become mainstream, enhancing European neighbourhood resilience, quality of life, and the circular economy’s transformative potential.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
