Cross-disciplinary Approach to Research European Neighbourhoods – Facilitating the Acceleration of NEB principles for Resilience in Cities

Objective

The project addresses a central question for Europe’s green and just transition: how can cultural participation transform the way citizens care for their cities and how can this collective care drive climate, social, and spatial transformation? Grounded in the NEB principles of sustainability, inclusion, and beauty, CareFabric introduces the concept “CARE-IS-MORE”, advancing an innovative integration of culture, knowledge, and environmental transition towards a culture of care as the true currency of transformation. CareFabric’s main objective is to strengthen the social fabric and civic engagement of European neighbourhoods as a cornerstone for a fair and inclusive green transition, leveraging cultural participation as a driver of collective empowerment and resilient urban transformation. Thus, CareFabric positions 4 city pilots as urban laboratories where technical and social innovation converge, transforming climate objectives into shared local narratives that foster ownership and trust, bringing together a multidisciplinary consortium of 17 partners bridging science, culture, and governance, including leading universities, municipalities, cultural institutions, civil-society actors, and European networks. Its methodological framework fuses 3 thematic strategies (Cultural participation, Social capital, and Green transition), with 4 transversal strands (New Knowledge, New Narratives, New Spaces, and New Connections) that guide research, co-creation, testing, and scaling. Building on the overarching CARE-IS-MORE approach and a matrix shaped methodological framework, CareFabric advances three complementary and evidence-based methods of participatory, creative, and connected neighbourhood transformation. This way, CareFabric creates a replicable European model of neighbourhood transformation, participatory, transdisciplinary, and rooted in the lived experiences of citizens, and aligned with the values and principles of the NEB.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
