NEURO-RESPONSIVE URBAN RECONSTRUCTION FOR INCLUSIVE AND SUSTAINABLE ENVIRONMENTS

Objective

"NEURO-REBUILD is a pioneering European Union project that aims to revolutionise post-crisis urban reconstruction, transforming it from merely functional to a holistic, human-centred healing process. Utilising an innovative combination of neuroscience, virtual reality (VR), and co-creation methodologies, the project will develop a validated framework to objectively assess the psychological impact of urban design on communities. It will produce high-fidelity Digital Twins of crisis-affected areas in Kyiv (post-war), La Palma (post-natural disaster), and Belfast (post-conflict/socio-economic deprivation). These immersive virtual environments will act as ""Neuro-Labs,"" where citizens' neurophysiological responses to various design scenarios will be scientifically evaluated. This unique approach enables iterative feedback, ensuring that objective data inform future urban interventions that enhance the human experience. The findings will then support an evidence-based Interactive Platform, accessible Design Guidelines, and actionable Public Policy Recommendations, empowering planners, architects, and communities to co-create urban spaces that are not only functional and sustainable but also actively promote mental well-being, social cohesion, and psychological resilience. Ultimately, NEURO-REBUILD will deliver practical tools and knowledge to foster sustainable healing and empower local agencies. NEURO-REBUILD seeks to establish a new standard in European urban planning, aligned with the principles of the New European Bauhaus, to build healthier, more beautiful, and inclusive cities that facilitate healing and a shared future."
