Objective
EU border authorities are central in EU’s external borders control, playing a critical role in preventing the illegal entry of persons and illicit goods, while ensuring the seamless flow of legitimate travellers and goods. Balancing these responsibilities is particularly challenging with limited human resources and the increasing traffic across borders, including a growing volume of people trying to enter illegally either hidden in vehicles (such as containers, trucks, vans, cars) or by presenting fraud documents. To address these challenges, BorderAI consortium proposes to develop an AI-driven multisensor fusion toolkit (called AI-toolkit) that will reduce the number of false negatives (cases where the problematic vehicles are undetected) and of false positives (cases where unproblematic vehicles are selected for inspection). Relying on this AI-toolkit, the BorderAI will implement multimodal solutions adaptable to varying threat landscapes and operational conditions at EU external borders, directly supporting the Schengen Area's vision of swift, secure, and simplified legal border crossings while effectively detecting unauthorized movements of persons or goods. To face the increasing border traffic and resource constraints, BorderAI will have a two-stage AI-assisted risk assessment process. The first filter provides rapid, real-time screening of vehicles at border crossings using passive sensors and AI-based multimodal data fusion to detect anomalies indicative of unauthorized crossings. Flagged vehicles undergo a more accurate, resource-intensive second-filter assessment using confirmatory sensors such as heartbeat detectors and chemical analyzers to minimize false positives while ensuring no suspicious vehicles evade detection. This two-tier approach enables automated, efficient passage for low-risk vehicles while focusing manual inspections on high-risk cases, in full alignment with the EBCG Capability Roadmap's goals for swift, simple & secure border crossings.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
