Objective
The overall objective of the EXCEED-AIR project is to establish a strategic, long-term, and sustainable European Excellence Alliance in AI-driven robotics within a Widening context. As institutions in Widening countries underperform on key R&I indicators – such as producing fewer high-impact studies, slower transfer to industry and public services, and lost leadership – the entire European Research Area fails to leverage the substantial human potential needed to lead in the modern, competitive, and challenging AI landscape. To address this, the project, with six partners from three Widening countries and four partners from three Advanced countries, aims to translate EU policy and S&T priorities into lasting institutional excellence and socio-economic impact through AI-driven robotics. Through a tightly structured work plan, EXCEED-AIR combines institutional reform and human capital development to provide much-needed momentum for Widening countries’ scientific excellence and leadership in AI-driven robotics. Specifically, the project establishes a joint virtual laboratory and drafts an R&I agenda emphasizing human-centric robotics, strategically managing cross-border seed collaborative projects. The first round of seed projects is organized across four fundamental Strategic Research Domains: robust perception, learning in unstructured environments, human-aware decision making, and multi-agent systems. These lead to further grounded projects and use cases focused on Targeted Application Domains: healthcare and aging, smart manufacturing, and marine environmental monitoring. Additionally, the project strengthens ties with regional innovation ecosystems, industry, education, and citizens, translating research and reforms into accessible experiences and actionable policy briefs. Finally, the contributions of EXCEED-AIR extend beyond robotics, further enhancing the scientific environment and providing new frontiers for European research at large.
