MSCA Doctoral Network on Bidirectional Wireless Power Transfer for Next-Generation Electric Mobility

Objective

The BiWPT Doctoral Network (Bidirectional Wireless Power Transfer for Next-Generation Electric Mobility) aims to revolutionize how electric vehicles (EVs) interact with the energy grid by developing efficient, safe, and fully bidirectional wireless power transfer (WPT) technologies. In line with the European Green Deal and Fit-for-55 objectives, BiWPT addresses the urgent need for sustainable and flexible electrification, enabling EVs to serve not only as means of transport but also as distributed energy assets that support renewable integration and reduce costly grid reinforcements.
Current WPT systems are largely unidirectional and limited in efficiency, alignment tolerance, and scalability. BiWPT will go beyond the state of the art by advancing misalignment-tolerant coupling mechanisms, bidirectional converter topologies, compact shielding designs, and real-world deployment strategies compliant with international standards. The network will create fundamental knowledge and validated prototypes that enable contactless and automated vehicle-to-grid and grid-to-vehicle energy exchange, essential for the future of shared, autonomous, and electrified mobility.
Through an interdisciplinary and intersectoral consortium of eight leading European universities and seven industrial partners, BiWPT will train 15 Doctoral Candidates in a combination of power electronics, electromagnetics, control, and systems integration. The program’s four scientific work packages (coupling, bidirectionality, integration, and deployment) are complemented by dedicated training and dissemination actions to realize innovation, standardization, and technology transfer.
By combining academic excellence with industrial engagement, BiWPT will equip a new generation of researchers to drive Europe’s transition toward smart, wireless, and sustainable electric mobility, strengthening European leadership in power electronics and energy systems innovation.
