Production and Experimental Evaluation of MW-Class Superconducting Cryogenic Cables for EV Fast Charging

Objective

This project introduces an innovative approach to the high-power electric vehicle charging and energy transmission sector by integrating MW-class superconducting cryogenic cable technology. Unlike traditional copper-based systems suffering from high resistive losses, thermal management issues, and infrastructure constraints, our solution combines cutting-edge superconducting materials with advanced cryogenic cooling systems. This enables ultra-high current transmission with near-zero energy loss, paving the way for scalable, grid-friendly ultra-fast EV charging systems. Further innovation lies in modular cryogenic cable architecture that enables easy deployment in megacities or long-distance power corridors, effectively eliminating the bottlenecks currently limiting the expansion of EV charging networks and high-capacity energy redistribution. The breakthrough lies in the synergistic combination of superconducting conductors, lightweight cryogenic insulation, and an integrated cooling and monitoring system specifically optimized for EV fast-charging applications. This project represents a significant experimental fabrication and validation of a scalable, cost-effective and field-ready cryogenic cable designed for transportation electrification rather than fixed grid applications. In this study, HTS cables were procured from Germany, and the winding and experimental evaluation of the superconducting cable were carried out domestically. This constitutes the first attempt in Türkiye to achieve high-power transfer using a copper-tube cryogenic system. Building on experience with previous cable prototypes, which faced flexibility limitations, we now aim to design, manufacture, and test an enhanced cable architecture that is both more flexible and capable of sustaining higher power levels.
