Advanced simulator for precise neonatal Minimally Invasive Surgery training

Objective

INFANTSIM j.s.a. is a Slovak deep-tech startup developing the world’s first fully synthetic, 3D-printed simulator designed specifically for training in minimally invasive surgery (MIS) in newborns. The project addresses a critical gap in surgical education: despite the increasing adoption of neonatal MIS, more than 70 % of European paediatric centres lack access to suitable neonatal-specific simulators. Current tools are either scaled-down adult models or prohibitively expensive, lacking the anatomical accuracy and feedback necessary for safe skill acquisition. INFANTSIM offers a realistic, modular simulation platform built on CT-based neonatal anatomy and synthetic tissues engineered to replicate real biological properties. The system combines physical precision with digital intelligence through optional motion sensors and AI-based analytics, providing objective feedback on surgical performance. This fusion of clinical expertise, advanced polymer science, and engineering enables highly realistic, data-driven training for paediatric surgeons worldwide. The project will progress from a validated prototype (TRL 4) to a clinically tested and market-ready system (TRL 6) through three validation phases in European and US hospitals and two iterative prototype development cycles. INFANTSIM’s ambition is to establish a new global standard for neonatal MIS training, enhancing surgeon preparedness, reducing clinical risks, and improving outcomes for the most vulnerable patients: newborns.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
