Objective
This proposal focuses on developing novel scaffold-based carriers of potent human neural stem cell therapies and evaluating their efficacy as novel treatment of chronic Spinal Cord Injury (SCI). Despite intense efforts and research breakthroughs, promising cell therapies, including neural stem cells, have not translated into commercial products that can address the unmet medical need of safe and effective SCI treatments.
The proposed treatment of chronic SCI relies on novel tissue constructs, named “neuroimplants”, which consist of a precision-microfabricated bioactive scaffold backbone that houses human iPSC-derived Neural Stem Cells (hiNSCs) of optimized lineage. Building upon previous prototypes that delivered mouse NSCs and improved locomotion performance in a mouse model of SCI, we will develop human neuroimplants by leveraging our unique expertise in two key technologies: scaffold laser microfabrication and hiNSCs.
Our efforts don’t focus just on the technical part of neuroimplant development. Based on discussions with SCI experts and potential customers (cell therapy companies) we describe a complete roadmap toward the clinical implementation of neuroimplants. Here, we propose to implement the first step of neuroimplant preclinical development (design and evaluate a prototype that contains hINSCs) and pave the way for next steps by establishing strong IP, developing a robust experimental pipeline for evaluating neuroimplant effects in mice, and researching the market in order to unveil potential customers and identify new products.
By delivering a novel delivery method for potent cell therapies and showcasing the capabilities of Reneurocell’s scaffold microfabrication approach, we aspirate to revolutionize the clinical practice of SCI treatment, enable a wide range of new products that can impact multiple fields, and strengthen European competitiveness in diverse fields including cell therapy, biofabrication and regenerative medicine.
