Objective
Loop Sense introduces a next-generation solution to address one of the most critical challenges faced by water utilities: significant distribution losses, which can reach up to 30% of the water supplied across Europe. Combining proprietary ultra-low-power sensing, resilient Mesh-based communications and advanced artificial intelligence algorithms, the system enables continuous monitoring of the urban water cycle and early detection of leaks, including low-flow and persistent events that conventional technologies often miss. The core innovation lies in a cloud-based web platform that integrates multiple data sources into a unified data lake, creating a consistent and scalable foundation for advanced analytics. From this shared data environment, optimisation models, hydraulic simulations, machine-learning anomaly detection, and real-time decision-support tools can be developed and deployed to detect anomalies, localise leaks, and support automated operational actions with high accuracy.
The project will advance the analytical models, integrate adaptive control mechanisms, and validate performance in relevant operational environments through pilots with water utilities. By project completion, Loop Sense will reach TRL 6.
The solution provides a powerful decision-support tool that will help utilities reduce non-revenue water to more economical and manageable levels, while also cutting pumping-related energy use and lowering operational expenditure, in line with the objectives of the European Water Resilience Strategy and the green and digital transition of the sector.
Its compatibility with heterogeneous infrastructures, modular design, and scalability position Loop Sense as a strategic tool for municipal networks, industrial facilities, and irrigation systems. By combining scientific rigour, field validation, and a robust market-entry strategy, the project establishes the technological and commercial foundations for large-scale deployment across Europe.
