Objective
The new Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive has tightened phosphorus (P) discharge limits in effluent wastewater. Wastewater treatment plants in EU territories were already struggling to meet previous limits and now must comply with a 50-65% reduction vs the previous regulation (from P removal of 80% to 87.5-90%) from August 2027, with the directive setting strict compliance goals from 2033 onwards.
P-Agro Minerals is developing the Letonite Filter System developing a modular, end-of-pipe P removal and recovery solution designed for installation at the final discharge of municipal and industrial WWTPs. The system boasts a proprietary design and our novel, also proprietary Letonite media: a novel media based on natural, mineral materials optimized to capture over 90% of residual P directly in flowing wastewater. This solution achieves lower costs versus chemical coagulant treatment, and is easily retrofittable in existing WWTPs, directly targeting the needs of small to medium scale operators struggling to adapt to emerging regulators.
Besides achieving P-removal compliance, our technology uniquely enables P circularity, as used Letonite can be recovered and used as soil amendment, closing the loop between wastewater and agriculture.
This EIC Pre-Accelerator project aims to advance the technology from small-scale to pilot scale validation at a WWTP. The core technical objective is the development and validation of a pilot-scale unit achieving stable operations and regulatory compliant P-removal. The project also supports establishing the Letonite Filter System value chain with all key stakeholders in Latvia as well as generating initial traction in target EU markets in preparation for the next phases: industrialization and subsequent market entry. With this, P-Agro accelerates its development roadmap towards market readiness in time to generate the needed impact in the EU wastewater treatment industry as well as environmental and circularity goals.
