Objective
AI-CIRCLE addresses the urgent need to empower Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in Widening countries to modernise research management and strengthen institutional excellence through digital and circular innovation. The project will qualify more than 150 HEI staff across all partners to drive governance reform, research assessment alignment, and the adoption of responsible, data-informed decision-making.
Centred on six institutional pilots in Türkiye, Latvia, Slovenia, Poland, Portugal, and Greece, AI-CIRCLE establishes a European excellence network advancing CoARA-aligned reforms, open-science and data-stewardship routines, inclusive academic careers, and interoperable, human-supervised digital workflows derived from existing systems.
Building on the experience of the REMODEL project, twenty-four SME will participate in two pilots across five sectors: Cultural and Creative Industries, Food Systems, Hospitality, Transport and Mobility, and Built Environment and Energy Systems; to co-design and test AI-assisted digital and circular practices, with before/after indicators and reusable playbooks for business modelling innovation.
Acting as a Community of Practice, AI-CIRCLE connects HEIs, SMEs, regional authorities, and innovation agencies through a two-way knowledge flow: HEIs transfer AI, data, and sustainability expertise, while SMEs provide real-world feedback that strengthens academic excellence and innovation relevance. Through its Twin Transition Innovation Hub, the project will ensure long-term valorisation, policy uptake, and sustainable growth across Europe’s Widening regions, contributing to a more cohesive European Research Area.
