ELEVATE: EUROPEAN EXCELLENCE IN AI-BASED NEURAL ENGINEERING FOR CAPACITY BUILDING IN WIDENING EUROPE

Objective

This proposal establishes ELEVATE: European Excellence in AI-based Neural Engineering for Capacity Building in Widening Europe - an excellence-driven alliance between 3 complementary partners: the Brain Data Group (BDG) at the University of Nottingham (UoN), a world-leading centre in brain–computer interfaces (BCI), neuro-AI, and responsible innovation; the Interactive Technologies Lab (ITL) at the University of Patras (UPAT), a Widening country institution with advanced infrastructure and strong applied experience in intelligent systems and extended reality (XR) but limited institutional maturity in research governance; and CYENS Centre of Excellence (CYENS), Cyprus’s (Widening country) national hub in interactive media, smart systems, and emerging technologies, with proven experience in neurotechnology deployment and regional innovation impact. The partnership directly responds to Horizon Europe’s “European Excellence Initiative” under the WIDERA ACCESS programme, by accelerating the institutional modernisation of UPAT (ITL) and CYENS, mainstreaming a culture of excellence, and establishing a Southern European node of AI and neurotechnology excellence. By combining BDG’s internationally recognised methodologies in brain-computer interfaces, research governance, and career development with UPAT’s advanced infrastructure (EEG, fNIRS, and a GPU-powered HPC cluster) and CYENS’s expertise in responsible AI, XR, and neurotechnology transfer, ELEVATE will deliver institutional reforms, strengthen digital and AI capacities, and embed knowledge valorisation and open science mechanisms across the research lifecycle. ELEVATE pursues 6 interlinked objectives: (i) modernising research governance and career development, (ii) mainstreaming excellence and knowledge valorisation, (iii) accelerating institutional reforms, (iv) boosting digital skills and AI capacities, (v) strengthening international competitiveness, and (vi) contributing directly to the ERA Policy Agenda 2022-2024

Keywords

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
