Objective
FREEDOM_WIDE strengthens research excellence, institutional capacity and ERA integration in Widening countries by addressing the five modules of the European Excellence Initiative call. A preliminary situation analysis shows that Widening institutions have significant research potential but uneven research management, open-science practices, digital capacities and support structures, with considerable variation across systems. To respond to these challenges, the consortium brings together Widening partners in Portugal (U.PORTO) Hungary (ELTE), Czechia (Masaryk University), Georgia (IBSU), Lithuania (LSMU) and Greece (KMOP), working with experienced institutions in Spain (IDIBELL), the Netherlands (Maastricht University), Finland (University of Oulu), Sweden (Karolinska Institutet) and Belgium (VUB).
Digital well-being and Problematic Use of the Internet (PUI) provide a thematic testbed for institutional development. The project pursues six specific objectives: strengthening inter- and transdisciplinary excellence; advancing scientific knowledge through cross-country PUI pilots; developing human capital and skills; deepening societal engagement; modernising governance and digital systems; and supporting policy uptake and ERA alignment. These objectives are implemented through seven work packages that cover all call modules.
FREEDOM_WIDE promotes open science, FAIR data, ethical governance and CoARA-aligned assessment. Activities include modular training, mentoring, mobility and peer learning for researchers and academia, research managers and technical staff. Regional Communities of Practice ensure societal engagement. Collaborative PUI pilots generate multi-country datasets and validate improved institutional capacities.
The project delivers FAIR datasets, methodological tools, co-created materials, governance reforms and policy briefs, strengthening the role of Widening institutions as credible contributors to the European Research Area.
