WIDENING AI RESEARCH AND INNOVATION FOR EXCELLENCE IN THE EASTERN PARTNERSHIP

Objective

The WARIE project places the Eastern Partnership (EaP) region at the hub of AI research and innovation by strengthening scientific excellence, institutional capacity, and innovation performance in leading universities and research institutions from Armenia, Georgia, and Moldova. While AI is a strategic priority for all three countries, fragmented infrastructures, limited human capital, and underdeveloped research governance are holding them back from international competitiveness and full integration into the ERA. WARIE addresses these challenges by leveraging the strong research foundations of partner institutions. It also builds on the expertise of leading European AI centers and strategic links with major European university alliances.

The project will establish interdisciplinary AI Centres of Research Excellence focused on Health and Agriculture, anchoring long-term scientific capacity, talent development, and regional collaboration through a coordinated four-year programme. It also aims to strengthen research governance, develop human capital in AI, deploy FAIR-capable digital infrastructures, and build durable institutional links with EU excellence partners. Together, these measures will help raise the research profile of the EaP region and deepen its integration into the ERA. Objectives of the WARIE project:
• Objective 1: Driving institutional transformation for a new ERA of research
• Objective 2: Empowering a new generation of AI innovators and research leaders
• Objective 3: Launching interdisciplinary Hubs of Research Excellence
• Objective 4: Accelerating the digital transformation with EOSC-capable infrastructures
• Objective 5: Enabling deep and sustainable integration into the ERA.

Through these objectives, WARIE directly supports the EU’s strategic priorities for the EaP region, including digital transformation, health resilience, environmental and climate action, and sustainable economic development.
