RAISING RESEARCH EXCELLENCE AND COMPETITIVENESS OF WIDENING UNIVERSITIES IN THE FIELD OF HOME CARE TO SUPPORT EMERGING CARE ECONOMY

Objective

The BetterCare project aims to enhance research excellence and competitiveness among five universities from four widening countries—University of Tartu (UTARTU) and Tallinn University of Technology (TalTech) in Estonia, NOVA University of Lisbon (UNL) in Portugal, University of Malta (UMalta) in Malta, and University of Belgrade (UBFP) in Serbia—by advancing the field of home care. Building on the COST Action CA22152 network, the initiative integrates expertise from additional partners, including University Miguel Hernandez (Spain) and LAB University of Applied Sciences (Finland). BetterCare will implement institutional reforms, foster interdisciplinary collaboration, strengthen stakeholder engagement, and deliver targeted training to research and management staff. The project will also launch pilot research projects addressing emerging care economy challenges. Key objectives include: (1) modernizing research frameworks through interdisciplinarity, career development, and AI adoption; (2) upskilling staff to improve research management and innovation capacity; (3) advancing joint research strategies and stakeholder-driven pilots; (4) expanding outreach and partnerships within the care economy; and (5) increasing international visibility and alignment with EU policy goals. Through these actions, BetterCare will position partner institutions as leaders in home care research, contributing to safer, technology-enabled care solutions and strengthening Europe’s research ecosystem.
