European doctoral network for proofreading the proteome

Objective

Targeted Protein Degradation (TPD), an innovative strategy to redirect the cellular degradation machinery towards the elimination of disease-relevant proteins, has attracted enormous attention from researchers, industry and clinicians. TPD is based on the capacity of a small molecule, the degrader, to re-route the ubiquitination machinery towards a selected protein of interest to trigger its ubiquitination and degradation by the Ubiquitin Proteasomal System, via its interaction with specific E3 ubiquitin ligases.

ProofReading will bring together a diverse community, assembling the necessary multidisciplinary expertise to develop novel TPD approaches applicable to various cellular and disease contexts, facilitating the generation of degraders. ProofReading will establish an interdisciplinary, intersectoral and international research programme to drive the development of tools, degraders and innovative strategies aimed at eliminating targets involved in cancer, infection, inflammation and rare diseases.

The network comprises 10 universities, 4 research centres and 8 innovative companies, which will provide state-of-the-art training for the recruited Doctoral Candidates (DCs). This is the only doctoral network related to proteome proofreading by using TPD that combines the knowledge in all disciplines, ranging from life to physical sciences, required to develop a degrader. Interdisciplinary and intersectoral secondments will expose the DCs to different working environments. We will organize 5 hands-on research workshops on central methodological and technical aspects of TPD and 7 courses on transferable skills, of primary importance for increasing the employability of the DCs. We will also address the important issue of mental health and well-being in science.

ProofReading will train 11 researchers with specific knowledge in the cutting-edge technology of TPD, which will contribute to the generation of future drugs to treat diseases.
