Training for innOvative Research in Cardiovascular science and tecHnology

Objective

Cardiovascular diseases remain the leading cause of death worldwide, responsible for approximately 18 million fatalities each year. Addressing this global challenge requires advancements in the understanding and modeling of the cardiovascular system’s complex biomechanical and biochemical processes. TORCH brings together 20 teams from academia, medical institutions, and industry, aiming to advance cardiovascular science and technology through a structured, interdisciplinary research program. Our approach centers on developing and refining patient-derived models of heart chambers and vessels, utilizing state-of-the-art clinical data and advanced medical imaging. The project comprises 12 subprojects, each executed by a Doctoral Candidate (DC), divided across three Work Packages (WPs). WP1 will focus on developing advanced mathematical and numerical models to describe the detailed biomechanical and biochemical behavior of blood. WP2 will create novel multi-physics models of the cardiovascular system, addressing interactions with medical devices, such as stents, valves, and assist devices. WP3 will integrate imaging data from computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with patient-specific clinical parameters, facilitating robust numerical simulations. TORCH will provide comprehensive training for DCs, combining research-based, local, and collaborative learning opportunities. By pushing the boundaries of computational modeling and data integration, TORCH will lay the foundation for next-generation technologies in cardiovascular diagnostics and device development.
