Doctoral Network on Intelligent Laser Precision Manufacturing

Objective

Laser-based precision manufacturing is a critical technology for Europe’s competitiveness, enabling high-value applications in microelectronics, photonics, and medical devices. However, its industrial adoption remains limited due to the complexity of laser material interactions and the lack of real-time process monitoring and adaptive control. INTELLASE addresses these challenges by laying the foundations for first-time-right intelligent laser micro and nanomanufacturing systems. The project focuses on three core objectives: innovative process design, real-time multimodal monitoring, and adaptive process control, combining physics-based modelling, advanced sensing, and AI-driven decision-making.

The objective of INTELLASE is to develop an interdisciplinary European network to train 15 doctoral candidates (DC) in laser-material interaction physics, photonics engineering, sensing- and modelling-powered intelligent control, enabling them to support and advance the development of next-generation laser-based micro-/nanomanufacturing systems. INTELLASE brings together a consortium of 20 partners from eight countries, including eight leading universities, two research centres, and ten industry actors, covering the full industrial ecosystem: laser system integrators, optical component designers, sensor developers, digitalisation providers, and end users. This structure ensures rapid transfer of research outcomes into industrial practice.

The doctoral candidates will be equipped to design and deploy intelligent laser manufacturing solutions that enable sustainable, high-throughput production and strengthen Europe’s leadership in advanced manufacturing. INTELLASE will deliver transformative technologies and a highly skilled workforce, creating significant scientific, economic, and societal impacts across strategic sectors.
