Initiatives to Accelerate the Translation of Research into Market-Ready Surgical Implantable Medical Devices by Strengthening Regulatory Science and Improved Regulatory Competencies Among Researchers

Objective

Implant-to-Market will be a Doctoral Network (combining training and research) composed of 15 academic partners and 5 industrial partners (large companies and SMEs), focused on accelerating the translation of research into market-ready surgical implantable medical devices. Despite major scientific advances, the medical device sector, particularly implantable devices for surgery, still faces slow innovation transfer due to fragmented regulatory knowledge, limited cross-talk between scientists and regulatory experts, and shortages of skilled personnel. Training is therefore essential to reinforce innovation capacity and global competitiveness. A European doctoral network integrating training and research is the most relevant instrument to address these challenges. The training programme developed in this project will be sustained beyond the project, and the qualifications of doctoral candidates and early-career researchers will be established by the consortium using shared methodologies.
The research methodology will rely on multidisciplinary and cross-sectoral collaborations involving universities, hospitals and industry. The work packages will address key needs: (i) integrating scientific data into regulatory processes and improving regulatory understanding among researchers; (ii) assessing safety and performance of implantable medical devices; (iii) reducing animal testing through alternative methods; (iv) developing multi-personalized and advanced medical devices; and (v) implementing sustainable-by-design strategies. Expected outcomes include improved regulatory-science practices, enhanced qualification pathways, accelerated translation of innovations, and stronger interaction between research, clinics, regulation and industry. implant-to-market will help bridge the gap between scientific discovery and clinical adoption worldwide.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
