Vaccinologists for Europe: Training network for developing next generation vaccines against mucosal pathogens

Objective

"AntimicrobiaAntimicrobial resistance (AMR) and emerging viral pathogens pose significant global health threats, with mucosal infections contributing to severe morbidity and mortality. Current systemic immunization strategies fail to induce effective mucosal immunity, including tissue-resident memory cells (TRMs) and secretory IgA (sIgA). Addressing this gap requires targeted research and training in mucosal vaccinology. The Vax4eU network aims to advance next-generation mucosal vaccines through a multidisciplinary program for 16 Doctoral Candidates (DCs), focusing on vaccine candidates and technologies that induce robust mucosal immunity, prevent infection, and combat AMR.
Vax4eU integrates cutting-edge approaches, including AI-assisted antigen design, novel adjuvants, and tailored nanoparticle delivery systems. Research spans the vaccine pipeline, from drug substance design to preclinical evaluation. Work Package (WP) 1 focuses on antigens and adjuvants, using platforms like mRNA and fusion proteins, along with mucosal-targeting strategies such as ""Blood2Gut"" adjuvants. WP 2 develops advanced delivery systems, including polysaccharide, protein, and lipid nanoparticles and innovative mucosal adjuvants like cyclic dimeric AMP. WP 3 identifies CoIs and CoPs using high-dimensional tools and preclinical models, including pigs, which closely mimic human mucosal immunity.
The program combines research with robust training, offering DCs individualized projects, network-wide training in AI tools, regulatory processes, drug delivery, and preclinical studies. Collaboration with academic and non-academic partners ensures DCs gain insights into scientific and translational aspects of vaccinology, supported by secondments, expert mentoring, and interinstitutional collaboration.
By advancing mucosal vaccine technology and addressing AMR, Vax4eU aligns with European public health priorities, fostering a new generation of skilled vaccinologists to tackle global infectious diseases."

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
