Objective
The Doctoral Network MONET 6G (Mobile and Optical Networks for 6G) addresses transformative challenges in developing next-generation communication systems. As global data generation and use accelerate, the intelligent integration of mobile and optical technologies—driven by AI and emerging innovations—has become essential for achieving sustainable, high-capacity, and inclusive connectivity.
MONET will bridge the physical and digital worlds through advances in optical X-haul integration, AI-native architectures, energy-efficient operations, and cyber-physical convergence. The project brings together leading academic groups and major industrial partners Ericsson, Nokia, Telefónica, and Orange, providing a multidisciplinary training platform for 12 doctoral candidates (DCs) to pioneer solutions for a secure, adaptive, and human-centred 6G networks. MONET ensures that its research outcomes are aligned with real-world application needs by fostering collaboration between academia and industry.
The programme is structured around four interconnected work packages, focusing on key aspects of 6G development: high-speed/low-consumption technologies, AI-enhanced network management, joint communication and sensing techniques, and emerging user-centric applications. MONET integrates cutting-edge technologies such as digital twins, edge computing, and semantic communication to optimise spectrum use, reduce energy consumption, and support immersive services including autonomous mobility and smart cities. Sustainability and efficiency are embedded throughout the programme, targeting significant reductions in network power usage and operational complexity.
Through hands-on training and industrial secondments DCs will gain direct experience in addressing real-world challenges. MONET will thus foster a new generation of innovators and research leaders, strengthening Europe’s global position in the 6G era and contributing to a resilient, intelligent, and sustainable digital future.
