Objective
CALLIOPE defines an innovative multidisciplinary and comparative approach to research on the role and agency of women in European written and linguistic culture (Latin, Germanic and Romance) during the period in which vernacular languages took over the functions previously performed by Latin (6th -15th c.). CALLIOPE’s methodology embraces material culture, social history, prosopography as well as historical sociolinguistics, and philology intended in its broader sense, and including its material components - palaeography and codicology. CALLIOPE moves from the assumption that the intelligence of this complex cultural transition is unattainable otherwise.
The methodology is contextual, comparative and interdisciplinary. CALLIOPE's approach is based on the belief that women's history and its documentation are a constituent component of the broader study of European history, especially when any product of language is concerned, not a complement to it.
The doctorate pursues four lines of research:
1. Women and writing
2. Women and literary culture
3. Women and linguistic culture
4. Women and society
Recent research in both history and gender studies has focused on women’s agency, revealing to an unprecedented extent women's lives and activities in both macro- and microhistory, their roles in the household and in courts as patrons; their culture, education and health. Historians have mostly been responsible for this advancement in knowledge.
CALLIOPE will concentrate on the agency of women with respect to immaterial culture, in the light of its direct relation with anthropology, social studies, and linguistics, and in a comparative perspective embracing the lives and activities of women across Latin, Romance and Germanic cultures. Such perspective has not, to date, met with specific scholarly attention, and no doctorates currently exist with such a focus.
