Industrial decarbonisation using innovative low-grade heat upgrade

Objective

This integrated project aims to conduct collaborative research while training fifteen doctoral candidates to make a a step change in accelerating the development and deployment of industrial high temperature heat pumps (IHTHPs) to support the decarbonization of heat provision in process industry. Supported by a world-leading science base, and engineering and technology capabilities as well as collaboration with key industries from across Europe, models and design tools will be developed that will be experimentally validated. The aim is to establish an maintain Europe as a leader in development and deployment of IHTHPs while training a workforce that will form the backbone of the industry. HeatMinds will tackle highly connected research questions, namely what are the optimum and sustainable cycle arrangements, compressor and heat exchanger designs and supporting energy policy frameworks? The consortium, comprising leading universities and research centres with closely related topics and synergetic, well-recognised and relevant expertise, will engage with European and international industry partners and collaborate with international centres of excellence. HeatMinds will establish a roadmap for deploying IHTHP technology to support the decarbonisation of several key industries.
