Objective
Approximately 70–90% of all new chemical entities and drug molecules under development are reported to have poor aqueous solubility. Since 2000 amorphous forms emerged as one of the most popular strategies in the pharmaceutical industry to enhance the solubility and bioavailability of challenging drugs. However, due to the intrinsic instability of amorphous materials, only a limited number of commercially available products have been developed so far by Europe’s biotech and pharmaceutical industries. Building on recent technological advances and scientific discoveries by the IDEAS partners, we are convinced that overcoming this
major bottleneck requires a more rational approach to the elusive amorphous physical state, transcending the current empirical methods that hinder innovation. This effort demands a unified project bringing together the cross-disciplinary expertise of academic research groups in materials science, physics, chemistry, and pharmacy, alongside industry partners. The network comprises a consortium of 10 beneficiaries (7 universities, 2 large companies, and 1 SME) and 6 associated partners (1 academic and 5 industrial) from 10 EU countries. The IDEAS Doctoral Network is designed to empower a new generation of young scientists in the field of amorphous pharmaceutical systems, strengthening Europe’s biotech/pharma industry and academic innovation capacity. Through this programme, we will train 15 doctoral candidates (DCs) to address key challenges associated with amorphous materials. The fellows will collaborate to develop eco-friendly manufacturing technologies for amorphous materials, establish science-based control over material properties, and explore a wide range of materials to achieve efficient production of high-quality amorphous formulations. This advanced research-driven training will be further enriched with opportunities to develop a broad spectrum of personal, organisational, and impactful skills.
