Bridging climate science and law for understanding climate litigation

Objective

Advancements in climate science now allow for the characterization and attribution of past and present climate harms to human activities. This recent advance helps to reliably project future climate risks on regional and global scales, while also allowing to understand the relative contributions of countries and companies to these disturbances. CLIMALAW (Bridging climate science and law for understanding climate litigation) will forefront the integration of climate science into litigation theory and practice, empowering stakeholders to fully tap into the potential of litigation for climate accountability. The CLIMALAW network will spearhead comprehensive, interdisciplinary training for doctoral candidates that bridges the hitherto disjointed fields of physical climate science and law, alongside a research agenda focused on the development of innovative tools for the identification of climate change impacts over varying timescales. The collective strength of this network is the interdisciplinary nature of our training and research supervision agenda, which will cultivate a new cohort of climate and legal experts, the CLIMALAW fellows, equipped to apply their expertise and knowledge to address the urgent challenges facing climate action. CLIMALAW will leave a lasting mark on academia, litigation practice, and society by mainstreaming climate science into climate lawmaking and enforcement, and by contributing to the achievement of the Paris Agreement targets and the UN Sustainable Development Goals 13 (climate action) and 17 (peace, justice and strong institutions).
